Mask clearing is another skill that we had to show we could do. I had a difficult time with this at first because I've never been good with water in my face. With this certain skill, I wanted to face that fear. I also noticed that my new mask had a much stronger outer band that had a great suction to it. It made it hard to loosen it just enough to allow water in. Matthew, our instructor, explained to breath just a little into the mask using your nose to loosen the suction. That worked!
Mask removal & clearing was the 3rd skill that we had to show we could do. It's difficult when your wearing contact lens. It's also difficult when you don't like water in your face or up your nose. I was able to improve on this skill in our pool. It wasn't easy. But first I got myself to acclimate to simply holding my breathe under water in the shallow end with a weight belt on and no mask. Then I moved on slowly to the mask removal and then mask clearing.
